Away from the typical developed tourist towns, this full-day tour takes you to Sotavento, or eastern Algarve. Start with a visit to the Old Town in Faro, meander through narrow streets and small squares to the Arco da Vila—built by order of Bishop Francisco Gomes, who oversaw the city's reconstruction after the 1755 earthquake.
Heading further eastwards, your next stop is Olhao, one of the oldest fishing towns in the region. Embark on a boat trip along the Ria Formosa lagoon, where you pass other inlets and smaller fishing villages.
The Ria Formosa is also an official Natural Park, a stopping place for hundreds of different birds, so make sure to capture the natural beauty around you. After your boat trip, enjoy lunch at your leisure—why not try some fresh seafood at one of the many Olhao restaurants?
Continue your journey to Tavira, a low-key town traditional in character. Visit Tavira Castle, a National Monument that dates back to the 12th century. Ascend castle's towers to look out over the town and the Gilao River. See the Church of Santa Maria do Castelo and admire examples of various styles of architecture that range from Gothic to Manueline, Baroque and Neoclassical.
