Venture out for an exploration of Barbados' intriguing colonial history and charming coastal scenery as a knowledgeable, local guide leads you from historic plantation sites to a glass-bottom boat cruise around the marine park at Carlisle Bay.

After being picked up at your hotel, wind your way up the mahogany-lined road to Cherry Tree Hill. Part of a former sugarcane plantation, the Morgan Lewis Windmill overlooks the verdant Scotland District and is one of only 2 intact sugar mills in the Caribbean. Learn how sugar was produced, then drive down to Cattlewash on the east coast for scenic views of Bathsheba and the rugged, rocky coastline of the island.

Admire the pounding Atlantic surf at the Soup Bowl—a favorite local surf spot—from the clifftop church of St. John's, a Gothic parish perched high above the sea. At Gun Hill, tour the historic military barracks and learn about the signal stations used to send warnings when strange boats approached the island.

From there, head to Carlisle Bay for a tasty Bajan lunch on the white-sand beach, and hop aboard a glass-bottom boat for a leisurely cruise around the turquoise waters of the marine park. Keep your eyes peeled for colorful marine life and remnants of the island's seafaring, pirating past—the sandy floor of the bay is dotted with cannon balls and anchors. Jump into the crystalline waves to swim and snorkel alongside sea turtles and over the vibrant tropical reef before you're dropped back at your hotel.
