The Blue Mountains—named for the cool-hued haze that colors its peaks and valleys—is an unspoiled wilderness of rocky outcrops and dense eucalyptus forests. The natural beauty of this UNESCO World Heritage Site is on full display as you visit Leura, Scenic World, and Featherdale Wildlife Park.
In the pretty mountain town of Leura, stroll down the leafy main street by manicured gardens and Victorian buildings. Pop into boutiques, candy shops, and museums displaying everything from teapots to 20th-century toys, and then cozy up to a table in a sweet café for a cup of tea.
At Scenic World, aerial trams and bushwalking trails give you unrivaled views of and access to the breathtaking natural surroundings of the Blue Mountains. Ride the glass-roofed Scenic Railway—the steepest funicular in the world—and wander the ancient rainforest on the Scenic Walkway. On the 1,215-foot-high (370 m) Skyway, look down over Katoomba Falls and the Three Sisters rock formation. The Scenic Cableway offers up views of monolithic Orphan Rock and the eucalyptus-forested plateau of Mt. Solitary.
Continue to Wentworth Falls and take a seat on the open-air deck of the Conservation Hut. As you admire the incredible vistas from this cliff-top eatery, enjoy a 2-course lunch of fresh salads and hearty sandwiches.
The last stop on your excursion is at Featherdale Wildlife Park, where adorable and unusual Australian animals awaits. Snap a photo with a snake, feed a kangaroo, and snuggle a cuddly koala. Watch the antics of other Aussie critters, from dingoes to wombats and Tasmanian Devils, before your return ride to Sydney.
