Description:
With its windswept beaches, lighthouse-topped sea cliffs, and eucalyptus-forested National Parks, Bruny Island is a wilderness lover's dream. It's also a prime foodie destination, producing some of Tasmania's finest gourmet treats. Taste and see the best of the island on this full-day outing.
After being picked up from your hotel, travel to Bruny Island via van and ferry. Only 60 miles long (100 km) and home to just over 600 people, this tiny slice of coastal heaven boasts spectacular natural scenery. Your local guide leads you to a beach to watch a colony of fairy penguins waddling into the waves and then for a walk along the sandy shoreline of Adventure Bay. Keep your eyes peeled for white wallabies hopping in the brush as you stroll.
All that walking is sure to work up an appetite, so head to Bruny Island Berry Farm for a fruity snack (seasonal) or stop for coffee at R-T Café and then ride through towering man ferns and eucalyptus groves to HIBA Fudge and Chocolate. Try a sweet treat or 2 before continuing on to the 200-year-old Cape Bruny Lighthouse, where you can gaze out over the rocky coast and the waters of the Southern Ocean.
Enjoy a lunch of local produce and head to Bruny Island Cheese, where you can tuck into an array of award-winning dairy goods. At Get Shucked Oysters, try a plump and briny mollusk pulled straight from the pristine waters of the d'Entrecasteaux Channel and then pull up a chair on the deck at Bruny Island Smoke House to sip a wine or whisky flight if you feel so inclined. Your tastings end on a sweet note, with a stop at Oakley's Gourmet Ice Creams or Nutpatch Nougat, before your return ride to Hobart.
