Description:

Spend a day sipping regional wines and soaking up the Provencal sunshine as you make your way between the hilltop medieval village of Le Castellet and the charming Mediterranean fishing towns of Cassis, Sanary-sur-Mer, and Bandol, stopping to refuel over a typical French lunch along the way.

Your private guide picks you up in Marseille and you ride in air-conditioned comfort through landscapes dotted with silvery olive groves and orderly patches of lush grapevines. Step out in Le Castellet, a tiny town of cobbled lanes, café-lined plazas, and picturesque stone houses. The sun beating down on the region’s garrigue vegetation perfumes the air with aromas of rosemary and thyme as you wander the ramparts, galleries, and boutiques of the fortified town.

From there, continue on toward the coast and the charming port towns of Bandol, Sanary, and Cassis. Admire the coastal calanques (rocky inlets), walk along seaside boardwalks, and feel the fresh breeze off the Mediterranean as you watch colorful boats bobbing in their harbors. If you'd like, you can also detour to the village of Ollioules—famed for its olive oil production.

Between villages, stop in at small boutique wineries to sample Provencal wines made using age-old techniques. You can sip on straw-colored whites, pale rosés, and powerful, tannic reds as your guide shares the history of winemaking in the region, where ancient Greeks first planted grapes more than 2,600 years ago. A midday break at a local restaurant is the perfect way to round out your outing, lingering over a delicious meal of typical southern French specialties before continuing with your afternoon.
