Description:

Ride over rugged landscapes in an all-terrain vehicle to the fortress-like cavern that was once home to one of Fiji's native tribes. Step into the subterranean world at the Neihehe Caves, and visit the home of a village priest to participate in a traditional kava ceremony.

Ride from Sigatoka inland, traversing the river and crisscrossing the forested hills in a sturdy, custom-built 4x4. Arrive at the home of the bete, the priest and keeper of the Naihehe Caves—legend holds that if you enter without his permission, you'll never get out. Take a seat for a traditional kava ceremony before trekking down a jungle path to the cave.

The name Naihehe means “to get lost” in Fijian, and it's a fitting moniker for these concealed caves deep within the Sigatoka Valley. During Fiji's tribal warfare days, the Sautabu mountain people used the cavern as a place of refuge, seeking shelter deep underground and climbing to a hidden opening to gather food when enemies besieged its main. Fiji's last tribal war took place here, after the Sautabu had camped out in the darkness for 79 days.

Turn on your headlamp and squeeze through the narrow entrance to the cave's cool and damp main chamber, which stretches back 560 feet (170 m) and soars to a height of 500 feet (150 m). Jagged stalactites, freshwater springs, and watery echoes fill the stony hall, as well as evidence of a more sinister, human past—a rock oven and ritual platform that were used during the tribe's cannibalistic rites.

Emerge from the cave and head to the village for a fresh lunch of island-style dishes. After the meal, linger in the sun by a nearby swimming hole and go for a refreshing dip if you'd like before your return ride to the coast.
