Description:

Deep in Fiji's tropical highlands, the Upper Navua River cuts an emerald ribbon through black, volcanic gorges. Set out for a rafting adventure down this pristine waterway, tackling Class II and III rapids and floating through tranquil stretches to take in the surrounding jungle scenery.

From Pacific Harbour, ride inland through the rainforest in a comfortable vehicle, fueling up for your whitewater ride with a morning snack. Grab your life jacket, helmet, and paddle, and set out for a short trek through the greenery to your put-in point near Nabukelevu Village. After a short safety briefing and an introduction to paddling, hop aboard your inflatable raft and set off downstream.

The Upper Navua winds between steep, 130-foot (40-m) cliffs of dark lava rock, fringed by leafy ferns and lush plant life. Drift through this serene setting, passing dozens of cascading waterfalls and the narrow slits of side canyons, and watch for native wildlife like elegant herons and brightly colored parrots.

Don't get too take a breaked, though—the river gets a bit more rough-and-tumble before long. Listen to your guide's pointers and commands as you plunge your paddle into the churning waters. The Class II and Class III rapids offer a thrilling ride for novice and experienced paddlers alike. In a stretch of calm water, steer your boat toward the base of a waterfall, and then find a quiet spot to enjoy a riverside picnic of meats, cheeses, breads, and fresh fruits and vegetables.

After lunch, continue your ride to the take-out point at Wainadiro Village, where you can change into dry clothes and enjoy an afternoon snack of soda and cookies while you reflect on your wild, watery adventure on the Upper Navua.
