After you fly in comfort to the island of Molokai, meet your guide for a comprehensive ground tour of the Kalaupapa Peninsula. As you explore the charming scenery, learn the story of the local community's tragic past and the church that Father Damien built.
Used as a colony for patients who suffered from leprosy, Kalaupapa became home to a Belgian missionary, Father Damien, when he came to the island in 1873. You can visit the historic St. Philomena Catholic Church, whose construction he oversaw and where he was buried in 1889 after contracting the disease himself.
Learn the story of Father Damien's works, and of Mother Marianne Cope, who came to Kalaupapa a few months before his death and went on to continue his efforts. Both she and Father Damien were canonized for their deeds.
You can also break for a lovely picnic at the east end of Kalawao and find an incredible view of the Kalaupapa Peninsula from the 1,000-foot (300-m) elevation of Palaau State Park. This 34-acre (13-ha) recreation area offers winding trails among eucalyptus and ironwood trees, as well as breathtaking views of Molokai's north coast.
