Description:
In the heart of the verdant Hanalei Valley, tour a working taro farm and a historic rice mill. Discover the area’s agricultural and cultural heritage through interactive activities, and then enjoy a farm-fresh lunch and refreshments.
Following a brief orientation, sip on a refreshing smoothie as you journey via van into fertile grounds tucked away from public access. Set within a National Wildlife Refuge, this area is home to endangered water birds, so be on the lookout for native species as you explore this rich farm land’s past and present.
Find yourself in the midst of taro patches that have been cultivated for 6 generations, and learn how this staple of the Polynesian diet is harvested and processed. Try pounding poi and enjoy a sample of this starchy root along with other produce from the farm. Activities like hands-on invasive species control let you play a part in this family’s long-standing agricultural tradition.
A lunch made with farm-grown ingredients is served before the tour continues on to the historic Haraguchi Rice Mill, the only remaining rice mill in all of Hawaii. Dating back to the 1800s, it is now listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Your guides share stories and historical anecdotes while showing you the mill's unique architecture and special machinery before your tour concludes.
