Description:

Set out for an exploration of southern Mexico City to observe historic architecture and murals by celebrated Mexican artists, and then immerse yourself in pre-Hispanic Xochimilco to learn about the region’s ancient lake and the still-functioning Aztec canal system aboard a trajinera boat.

After being picked up from your hotel, ride down the Avenida de los Insurgentes—the second longest avenue in the world—on your way to the Fuente de Cibeles, an exact replica of a fountain in Madrid and a symbol of fraternity between Spain and Mexico.

Admire the mural-bedecked walls of the Polyforum Cultural Siqueiros, and then pass by the Plaza Mexico, the world’s largest bullring. Continue on to University City to tour the campus of the National University of Mexico. Here, take in impressive murals depicting Mexican history by celebrated artist Diego Rivera.

Make your way out to Xochimilco—this Nahuatl name means “Place of Flowers”—to visit the remnants of an ancient lake and the pre-Hispanic settlements on its banks. Discover the elaborate Aztec canal system that once connected pre-Columbian towns and villages, and check out floating gardens called chinampas as you drift along aboard a traditional, colorful trajinera boat. These brightly-painted, gondola-like vessels take you through this UNESCO World Heritage site to the tune of lively mariachi music before you return to your hotel.
