Description:
Set out for a day-long excursion to Montevideo, Uruguay’s beachside capital. Cruise by ferry to this vibrant and eclectic city for a guided city tour and free time to explore the historic Ciudad Vieja, the colorful homes of Barrio Reus, and the waterfront Rambla.
After being picked up from your hotel, head to the ferry terminal in Buenos Aires to pass through customs and take a seat for the scenic, 2-hour cruise across the Rio de la Plata to Montevideo. Meet your guide and set out for an exploration of the lively port city’s historic center and dynamic neighborhoods.
Begin by entering the Ciudad Vieja, the one-time fortified center of town, through the Puerta de la Ciudadela. Stroll the colonial avenues to the Teatro Solis—this neoclassical opera house was built in 1856 and sits regally at the end of Plaza Independencia.
Note the area’s many museums—you may wish to return to see the unusual portraits at the Museo Torres Garcia or tour the historic Cabildo de Montevideo. At the Palacio Taranco, admire the ornate, French-inspired architecture, period furniture, and elaborate artwork. Gaze up at the towering, Art Deco Palacio Salvo, and step inside the Iglesia Matriz—this 1804 cathedral is the city’s oldest public building.
Savor a traditional Uruguayan lunch of grilled meats at a parilla in the waterfront Mercado del Puerto, and then enjoy some free time to take in the city’s sights on your own before your return ferry to Buenos Aires.
