Description:

McLaren Vale may be famed for its wineries, but the charming Fleurieu Peninsula is also dotted with microbreweries, beer houses, and pubs known for pouring a perfect pint. Sate your thirst for hops, barley, and adventure as you visit beaches, bluffs, and bars in a rugged, 4x4 vehicle.

A local guide describes South Australia's beer-making scene as you take the short drive to the Fleurieu Peninsula. This picturesque cape is full of surfer-luring beaches, world-class vineyards, and eateries at the forefront of Australia's food and drink scene. Make your first stop at Goodieson Brewery, and pull up a stool to taste their award-winning brews. Sip a refreshing pilsner and a German-style maibock as an expert brewer describes the beer-making process and what sets Aussie brews apart.

From there, cruise over off-road tracks to a coastal bluff to take in sweeping views over the Southern Ocean. Still thirsty? No worries. Your next stop is at Red Poles in McLaren Vale, where frothy pours include an Australian IPA and an American-style dark lager. At the lovely Salopian Inn, the head chef whips up a lunch of fresh, beer-attentive dishes like Berkshire pork buns and T-bone steaks. After your meal, ride through the vines to the Ekhidna Beer Haus, where a tasting paddle includes refreshing ginger ale and wheat beer—perfect afternoon libations.

Drive along Silver Sands beach, hopping out to feel the sea breeze off of Gulf St Vincent as you sip—wait for it—an ice-cold beer. Finally, head to the Smiling Samoyed Brewery. Grab a seat on the patio, quaffing handcrafted ales on the edge of the Myponga Reservoir. On the off chance that the beer doesn't offer up enough local flavor, the kangaroos hopping lazily by are an instant reminder that you could only be drinking down under.
