Begin the day with a drive west of Muscat to the foot of the Hajjar Mountains, where the strategic town of Nizwa has stood for centuries. Observe the enormous fort, an important landmark for a city with a turbulent past. Pop into the souk to admire the local handicrafts and pick up a souvenir or two.

The mountain backdrop becomes your next destination. Climb to the traditional villages and see the 400-year-old mud-houses at Al Hamra and terrace farming on display at Wadi Ghul. Complete your tour on a high, ascending Jeleb Shams—Mountain of the Sun—at nearly 10,000 feet (3,000 m). Suffice to say the views of the dramatic mountain landscape are spectacular.
