Description:
For 3 exhilarating hours of flight, join up to 2 of your friends and a certified flight instructor to learn basic maneuvers, takeoffs and landings, and over-water techniques. Soar to the top of Haleakalā, Maui's famous shield volcano; then cross the channel to the Waipio Valley's lush coast.
Start at the Maui Flight Academy, centrally located on Maui. With up to 2 friends, board your airplane with your certified flight instructor and prepare for takeoff. Your state-of-the-art Cirrus SR22 is carefully maintained and equipped with multiple safety precautions.
After takeoff, climb to 8,000 feet (2,438 m) for breathtaking views of Haleakalā. Fly over the volcano and see its astonishing desert-like landscape, its cinder cones, and if you're lucky, steaming magma. Don't forget to look out to the endless expanse of ocean beyond the island.
Afterward, speed across the channel and learn to use the aircraft's navigation and autopilot systems. Hand-fly for 53 nautical miles (98 km) toward the Big Island's Waipio Valley, looking out for rushing waterfalls, verdant ridges, and cerulean water. From there, cruise all along the island's northern coastline before landing in Hilo for a break and debriefing.
On your flight back to Maui, continue your introduction to over-water techniques, radio procedures, and flight maneuvers. Before your last landing, appreciate the entire Hana side of Maui. Touch back down on land having experienced a comprehensive introduction to the skies.
