Description:

On December 7, 1941, Japanese Imperial forces attacked Pearl Harbor, sinking ships, killing thousands, and pulling the United States into World War II. Visit Pearl Harbor's historic sites and memorials, and tour the USS Bowfin to learn about submarine warfare in the Pacific Theater.

Arrive at Pearl Harbor and head to the USS Bowfin directly or spend some time exploring the Visitor Center's exhibits with the help of an audio-guide. Hear stories from Pearl Harbor survivors, and get more in-depth insight from National Park Service historians.

Continue down Arizona Memorial Drive to the USS Bowfin. This storied vessel launched 1 year to the day after the Pearl Harbor attacks, on December 7th, 1942. Submarines were incredibly effective in the battles of the Pacific Theater, sinking over 30 percent of the Japanese navy. The Bowfin itself sunk 16 enemy vessels. Listen to your audio-guide to learn what life was like for the Navy sailors who served on the Bowfin and other submarines during World War II.

After your tour, spend some time at the Waterfront Memorial reflecting on the 52 US submarines and 3,500 submarine sailors who were lost during World War II. Get a close look at artifacts like the Regulus missile, peer out of the periscope in the conning tower of the USS Parche, and see an Imperial Japanese torpedo. Before you leave, make sure to check out the McCann Rescue Chamber to learn about the only successful rescue of men from a sunken American submarine.
