Description:

Get in touch with your inner castaway on bewitching Rarotonga, where bone white beaches and jungle-covered peaks meet tropical plantations and a millennium's worth of Polynesian culture. Visit natural landmarks and ancient sites, husk a coconut, and watch a master pearl carver at work.

Take a seat on a comfortable, air-conditioned bus and take in the spectacular scenery as you cruise along the Ara Metua, or Road of Toi. This 11th-century road encircles the entire island to connect maraes (ceremonial sites), and is paved in slabs of coral and basalt. Ride along the coast to Black Rock—these volcanic rocks cropping out of the turquoise waters are a prime snorkeling destination. Stop at the Garden of 7 Stones and learn about the Maori canoe traditions.

Head inland, winding by historic churches and tropical plantations, where the trees hang heavy with citrus, bananas, and papaya. Raemaru Mountain rises in the distance as you approach Rito Cook Islands, a company that makes health and beauty products from coconut oil. Try your hand at husking and opening this treasured island fruit, and see how coconuts are pressed to extract their sweet and fragrant oil.

Continue on to the Needle Lookout, a volcanic outcrop high above the very center of the island. The heady scent of plumeria fills the air as you gaze out over the island's verdant hills and brilliant beaches from coast to coast. Your last stop is at the studio of Tokerau Jim, a master pearl carver. His precious works of art come in delicate hues of pink, green, silver, and cream. Check out the charming wares before you return to your hotel.
