Description:

Paddle across the waves from La Jolla Shores for an unforgettable encounter with majestic gray whales, led by naturalist guide. Approaching a migrating pod in a kayak is an eco-attentive and intimate way to get up close to these magnificent mammals.

Meet your guide at a shop near La Jolla Shores, where you’re fitted for your equipment and given all your gear. Walk down to the beach and, after a short paddle lesson, take off. Your easy-to-maneuver, sit-on-top kayak is the perfect vessel for beginner and experienced kayakers alike, and your guide offers tips and pointers as you go.

Cruise past the La Jolla Sea Caves, where crashing surf has carved tunnels and inlets into the rocky cliffs, and paddle out into open ocean. The sea floor near La Jolla drops off quickly into a deep underwater canyon, which means that migrating gray whales can be seen within just 1 mile (1.6 km) of shore.

Twice each year, gray whales make the 12,000-mile (19,300-km) journey from Alaska to the balmy waters of Baja. Your compact kayak lets you get closer to the massive adults and good-natured calves than you could on a large whale-watching boat. Gaze down as the whales swim beneath you, watch them breach and spout, and marvel at these ancient ocean creatures from your breathtaking vantage point.

Take in the sweeping coastal scenery as you paddle back to dry land, and enjoy an opportunity to ask more questions of your naturalist guide over a cup of tea, hot chocolate, or warm apple cider.
