Description:

Tighten your shoelaces for this 6-mile (9-km) run through Golden Gate Park, a sprawling green space that’s pretty enough to take your breath away. Pass outdoor sculptures by Andy Goldsworthy, take in sweeping views of the forest and bay, and get some exercise while you sightsee on this local-led running tour.

Warm up and start moving, taking off alongside your guide from the charmingly modern DeYoung Museum. Jog past the colorful market stalls and neighborhood shops of the Richmond District, and head toward the trees as you draw closer to the Presidio—an expansive park and former military base on the very tip of the San Francisco Peninsula.

Make your way along meandering trails that wind through the park—now a designated National Historic Landmark. Absorb the stillness of the forest while you dash down a tree-shaded pathway known as Lovers Lane, and gaze out over the Palace of Fine Arts, Alcatraz, and Tennessee Hollow from Inspiration Point. Take a break to stretch and admire Goldsworthy’s towering Spire, made from felled cypress trees, and Wood Line, an organic line of eucalyptus branches that weaves through the forest.

Loop back into Golden Gate Park and pass by the lovely Victorian architecture of the Conservatory of Flowers, which houses an amazing and exotic botanical garden. The final work of art you see on your run is Goldsworthy’s earthquake-inspired Drawn Stone, which mimics a fault line as it cracks and winds toward the DeYoung’s patinaed copper exterior.
