Description:

The Tenderloin—SF’s rough-around-the-edges downtown demimonde—is forging a new identity as ethnic eateries open up, serving fresh and exciting flavors from around the globe. Eat your way between the neighborhood's locally loved dining destinations and Southeast Asian favorites in Little Saigon on this walking tour.

Just a few years ago, a visitor to San Francisco who accidentally found themselves on the seedy sidewalks of the Tenderloin would have instantly hightailed it out of there. Not so anymore—today, hip bars are cropping up in the pocket of the Tenderloin that fringes Nob Hill, and a delicious array of locally owned eateries have opened up shop in the faded historic storefronts of this decidedly un-touristy urban enclave locals call the Tendernob.

Head to Larkin Street, where hole-in-the-wall restaurants dish up aromatic banh mi and pho in the city’s Little Saigon neighborhood. Get a crash course in Vietnamese cuisine as you sample delicacies laced with fish sauce and topped with bright herbs like lemongrass, chili, and lime. From there, seek out unexpected tastes of international cuisine in this rapidly changing section of the Tenderloin.

From Korean fried chicken to Greek souvlaki, Pakistani curries to Moroccan tagines, Ethiopian injera (sourdough bread) to Yemeni specialties like bint al-sahn (honey cakes), there’s something here to excite even the most well-traveled palate. With your guide on hand to help decipher the best dishes on each menu, stretch your gustatory horizons as you taste the delicacies on offer at a handful of tiny establishments in the burgeoning district.
