San Francisco’s first neighborhood is also arguably its coolest, with a fantastically diverse array of hip shops and restaurants crowding its vibrant, sun-soaked streets. Dive into the Mission's past and present with a local guide on this walking tour of the birthplace of the city (and, more importantly, the burrito).

Meet your guide near the Golden Fire Hydrant, which helped save the district from total destruction during the fires that followed the 1906 earthquake. See buildings that date back to the 19th century along one side of 20th Street, which was ultimately the line where the fire was stopped, and walk through the popular urban green space of Dolores Park.

Make your way past the colorful Victorians of Liberty Hill and the lines-out-the-door taquerias on Valencia Street to Mission landmarks like the brightly painted Women’s Building, an arts and education community center, and the B’nai David Temple. The Mission is packed with more eclectic attractions as well, like a tiny parklet with a shrub shaped like a triceratops and a bullring-turned-girls’-school-turned-retirement-home.

Your tour route concludes at the Mission Dolores. Built in 1776 by the Spanish, this adobe church is the oldest structure in San Francisco. You can choose to linger here, exploring the building, checking out Native American artifacts, and walking through the garden of California plants after parting ways with your guide.
