Description:
Trek into the rugged, outback beauty of the Red Centre with a guided hike to the rocky rim of Kings Canyon. Look out over the gorges of Watarrka National Park and refresh in the oasis-like Garden of Eden. Visitors after a less strenuous hike can opt for an easier walk along the canyon floor.
From Kings Canyon Resort, hop into an air-conditioned coach and travel up the road to Kings Canyon in the heart of Watarrka National Park's sprawling wilderness. Lace up your shoes and follow your guide as you begin the steep ascent to the canyon's rim—locals call it “Heartbreak Hill” for the cardio-pumping workout you get on this tough climb.
At the top of the canyon, take in magnificent vistas of Watarrka National Park, gaze down 885 feet (270 m) to the floor of the canyon far below you, and walk to various lookout points for breathtaking views of the gorges and plains of the surrounding landscape. Next, head down between the cliffs to the Garden of Eden for a cool respite—this lush waterhole amid the red rock is fed by a natural spring, and exotic plants like ferns and gum trees flourish. Weave through a maze of weathered sandstone formations on your hike out of the canyon.
If you'd like to experience Kings Canyon in a more leisurely fashion, you can also choose an easier, shorter trek on the canyon floor that leads you down a cool,shady trail between the cliff walls. After your half-day of adventure in the outback, your coach awaits to return you to Kings Canyon Resort.
