Description:

Rising from the rust-colored outback of Australia's Red Centre, the monolithic grandeur of Uluru—also known as Ayers Rock—captivates more than 400,000 visitors each year. Discover this ancient wonder's sacred significance with your indigenous guide as dawn breaks and sets the landscape aglow.

Set out toward Uluru just as the sky begins to brighten. Sunrise at this spectacular formation in the heart of the desert is well worth the pilgrimage into the remote Red Centre. Sip a warm drink as the sun peeks over the horizon and the rock shifts to hues of ochre, amber, and crimson. The stirring vista makes it clear why this iconic site holds such deep importance to the region's native Anangu people.

Delve further into Anangu heritage and beliefs at the Uluru-Kata Tjuta Cultural Centre, where you can explore exhibits on Tjukurpa—the spiritual story that gives order to life and the land. Check out local artwork and handicrafts, then enjoy a hearty breakfast before meeting your Anangu guide. Gather around a campfire to hear ancestral stories and learn traditional bush skills like making kiti (bush glue) and spear throwing.

Finally, set out toward the base of Uluru for an interpretive walk along the Lungkata trail. Hear the unfortunate tale of Lungkata, a blue-tongued lizard whose ill-fated demise left a permanent mark on Uluru's undulating red surface. As you walk through the bush, gain more insight into the beliefs and lifestyles—past and present—of the Anangu, whose identity is inextricably tied to Uluru and the land.
