Your experience starts with a visit to Ford's Theatre, where Abraham Lincoln was assassinated on that fateful night of April 14, 1865. See the theater box where Lincoln sat as history was made, and check out life in 19th-century Washington, D.C. via interactive exhibits, videos, and displays of historic artifacts that include the clothing and boots Lincoln wore that April evening.

The Center for Education and Leadership offers information on the social changes that took place during Lincoln's tenure. Here you can also follow the events that directly accompanied the assassination through detailed exhibits such as a re-creation of the Virginia tobacco barn where John Wilkes Booth was killed.

After breaking for lunch on your own, make your way to President Lincoln's cottage, where President Lincoln stayed for 13 months—commuting to the White House—to focus while writing the Emancipation Proclamation.
