Description:

Tropical escapes just don't come more picture-perfect than Whitehaven Beach, a 4.5-mile (7-km) stretch of pristine white sand along the shore of Whitsunday Island. The fine, pure silica grains shimmer next to the cerulean waters of the Coral Sea, and it's yours to enjoy on this full-day cruise.

Step aboard your vessel and cruise through channels between islands, gazing out at the serene seascapes and island scenery as you pass by palm-dotted beaches and over the waves.

Arrive at Whitehaven and hop onto shore. The high silica content in the sand here means that it doesn't retain heat, so you can stroll over the superfine grains without burning your toes. At the north end of the beach, watch where the waves swirl the sand into undulating patterns at Hill Inlet. At the south end of the beach, swim in the balmy waters and grab a snorkel and mask to check out the colorful coral and fish in the shallows.

Climb back onto the boat and sail across Hill Inlet to a landing point, where you embark on a leisurely nature walk. Listen as your guide shares information on the island's unique flora and fauna and the heritage of the Aboriginal Ngaro people who first inhabited the Whitsundays. Weather permitting, a short cruise to the life-filled reefs of nearby Esk Island is a perfect chance to snorkel up close to teeming schools of vibrantly colored fish.
