Description:
Escape to the Yarra Valley—one of the world's premier food and wine destinations—for 2 days of indulging in the region's fine varietals and spectacular scenery. Sip robust reds and bright whites, ride the historic Puffing Billy train, and recharge in the natural beauty of the Dandenong Range.
Day 1
Your tour begins amid the towering eucalyptus and fern-filled gullies of Sherbrooke Forest. Walk tree-shaded trails, listening for the songs of elaborately plumed superb lyrebirds and the laughter-like call of kookaburras. Enjoy an Aussie breakfast of billy tea, chocolaty lamington cakes, and vegemite crackers before you climb aboard the Puffing Billy steam locomotive. This restored, century-old train chugs by scenic bushland and over the Monbulk Creek Trestle Bridge.
From there, it's on to the wine. Visit Rochford Winery and another two leading wineries for wine tasting, appreciation and education. Of the many wineries in the area, you may visit estates such as Dominique Portet. Experience cellar-door tastings of their award-winning selections of Australian wine.
Day 2
Spend your morning at your leisure. Arrange additional winetastings, or just find a quiet outpost to stroll, shop, and savor the slow pace of the countryside. In the afternoon, visit the Healesville Wildlife Sanctuary, where you can get up close to native Australian animals like platypuses, koalas, and wombats in natural bush habitats, before your early evening return to Melbourne.
