Description:

Immerse yourself in the rural life of the Yogyakarta region on this fascinating full-day tour. With visits to 4 quintessential villages, you can see Javanese arts and culture, sample authentic snacks, visit markets and historic landmarks, and experience the rich traditions of local life.

Start your tour in the village of Kotagede, renowned for its silver crafting and the historical capital of the Mataram kingdom. Take a bicycle ride through the winding trails and past silver craft shops to a local bakery. Try a sample of kembang waru, a sweet native to the area, and learn about how it is made in simple village settings.

Next, walk through the traditional marketplace to Kotagede Mosque, the oldest mosque in Yogyakarta. Admire the Javanese construction and learn about its history dating back to 1575 before you visit the Royal Cemetery. Enjoy a guided walk through the village, observe the traditional kalang architecture, and hear stories from the Mataram era.

After lunch, visit the village of Giriloyo, known for conserving techniques and traditional batik dyes recognized by UNESCO as part of the world's cultural heritage. At Banyusumurupo, meet a local artisan who makes sheaths for the kris, a traditional dagger, and learn about its symbolism to Indonesian culture.

At Kasongan, gain insight into the cultural role of ceramics and the process of earthenware crafting as you see potters knead, shape, dye, and burn the clay to form elegant vases, pots, and porcelain.
