Feeling dark? This dungeon tour was designed with your cryptic cravings in mind. Journey through 2,000 years of York’s gory, gruesome history—specifically 11 different grisly events—and get to know the twisted characters behind such brutal acts.
Kick-off the tour at Clifford Tower, and ignore your chills while the ghost of Robert Aske retells the horror behind his uprising against Henry VIII. Drop by the plague doctor for a disturbing account of the Black Death, then watch Guy Fawkes hatch his soon-to-fail Gunpowder Plot against the Houses of Parliament.
Next, head to Golen Fleece Pub, where a ghoulish landlord recounts the tale of the two Williams of 1821, then stifle your screams at Eric Bloodaxe, begging to badmouth the Saxons during their battle against his Vikings.
An interrogation by the torturer turns any stomach, while tools like the tongue tearer and the chappy chopper might make you crave the light of day. Walk past the judge, responsible for dropping the gavel for every crime ever committed, before heading to Castle Prison.
Here, have a chat with Dick Turpin (famed highwayman-turned-horse-thief), before watching him hang. Also meet the Witch Pricker in York’s Market Square, while witches behind her are burned at the steak.
