Hammocks Artisan's Home Workshop in Tixkokob - Day Experience
One of the most valued handcrafts made by the indigenous communities in the Yucatan Peninsula is the hammock—they represent the income more than 700 families in the area. Most of the hammocks for sale in Yucatan are handmade in family workshops. En route to Izamal and Chichen Itza, you will stop at Tixkokob, a rural community located 30 minutes east of Merida. This is a town famous for its high-quality hammock waving; you are here to meet a local artisan at his family’s workshop. You will discover the secrets and “techniques” to best lie in a hammock and mostly you will experience a close encounter with the artisan culture while you observe, learn and optionally participate in a demonstration of their craft. The journey continues towards Izamal, probably one of the eldest cities in Yucatan, founded in the 4th century A.D. by Itzamna, leader, and patriarch of the Mayan people. Known as the “City of three cultures”, Izamal bring together elements of the pre-hispanic, colonial and contemporary eras. Mexico City Ancient Agriculture: Xochimilco's Chinampas - Day Experience
Discover the ancient chinampas of Xochimilco on a 3-hour nature experience in the south of Mexico City.

Take a “trajinera” boat ride (30 mins) through the Xochimilco canals to arrive at one of Mexico City´s last surviving ¨chinampas¨. These small plots of land are built up from the canal beds and used to grow crops, a sustainable technique that dates back to Mesoamerican times. Discover the importance of this agricultural heritage system as you explore with a member of the local chinampa project. Learn about agroecology and how millions of species shape ecosystems as you observe an array of vegetables, flowers, and herbs.

Enjoy a tasty lunch at the chinampa, sampling dishes like fresh quesadillas with huitlacoche (corn mushroom) and pumpkin flowers, as well as pork shawl gorditas, tlacoyos and chinampa salad.

At the end of the experience, you´ll be privately driven back to your hotel.

This project supports the Xochimilco Agroecology Initiative, a non-profit organization that provides training in regenerative agroecology for local farmers.
