In a landscape far removed from the modernity of Abu Dhabi, explore the largest sand desert in the world and the charming Liwa Oasis. Admire the spectacular dunes, see how locals put the land to use, and visit a Bedouin settlement for lunch in one of the UAE's most remote places.
Begin with the drive away from the skyscrapers and extravagance of Abu Dhabi and journey towards the ancestral home of the Nayhan family, one of the six ruling families of the UAE. As part of the vast desert expanse of the Rub' Al Khali, the area around Liwa Oasis contains some of the most spectacular sand dunes in the region, reaching a truly remarkable size.
Liwa itself is made up of a series of Bedouin settlements, and you stop at one to take lunch and enjoy the peaceful surroundings. Given the heritage of the local area, it's an excellent place to learn more about the Bedouins' culture; as a people, they have learned to adapt and use the harsh surroundings and not just survive, but thrive over the centuries.
You also have the chance to observe how the land is used. Given the harsh desert surroundings, the abundance of date farms and palm groves could be a surprise, but you can see how they form an important part of the local economy.
Once you're back on the road, pass by the herds of camels that still play a vital role in the rural communities as you make your way back to Abu Dhabi.
