Discover some of Portugal's most charming birds as you walk through the greenery of Ria Formosa and a bird-watcher's paradise at Castro Marim Nature Reserve. Use your guide's expertise to find the day's best spots and see how many species you can identify as you learn about the region's ecology.
Unlock your inner ornithologist and set out to uncover the myriad of birds that call Algarve home while you explore both the Ria Formosa Natural Park and Castro Marim Nature Reserve. Depending on the season, you may find yourself by a lagoon, atop a cliff, next to a salt lake, or in open plains.
Train your binoculars on the skies and get a glimpse of the soaring native species. Your expert guide, with 30 years of experience as a birdwatcher, tries to help up you find some of the rarer birds that occasionally circle in the area, such as the azure-winged magpie, the rare spectacled warbler, and the amazing osprey.
Narrated with snippets of information about local biology, this visit is an insightful way to learn about the country's ecosystem. Black-winged kites, booted eagles, and marsh harriers could be the highlights of the day, along with several aquatic species such as the zitting cisticola, avocet, little tern, red-crested pochard, purple heron, spoonbill, and glossy ibis. If you're lucky, you may even spot the secretive little bittern and the exotic black-headed weaver.
