Famous for its oysters and exceptional beauty, the Arcachon Bay is a great place to taste and see France's best. Climb Europe's highest sand dune, gaze at the piercing blue bay, and breathe in the pine-scented air. Then taste some of the best oysters in the world, complemented by local wine.
The Arcachon Bay is a combination of extraordinary landscapes. Admire the pine forest, the largest in Europe, spreading out as far as the eye can see, and let its fresh aromas fill your nose. Gaze at the bay, a true inland sea lined with miles of perfectly maintained sandy beaches, and back to Arcachon, a belle époque town with grand villas built in the 1860s.
Be courageous enough to climb the 170 steps to the top of the Pilat Dune, the tallest dune in Europe, measuring 558 feet (117 m) at its highest point. Marvel at a gorgeous panorama over the bay of clear turquoise waters and endless pine forests; then enjoy running down at full speed and maybe put your feet in the water.
The bay produces excellent oysters, and it's the principal French supplier for all of Europe, producing up to 10,000 tons every year. Finish at a local producer and savor some with a glass of regional white wine.
