Experience a fantastic way to see a country with a train ride to the natural highlights between Dunedin and the inland town of Middlemarch. Ride past ever-changing landscapes, through tunnels, and over bridges that are a marvel of early railway engineering.

Board your train at the railway station in Dunedin—a charming building in its own right—and set off on a sightseeing journey to remember. Early on, pass over the Wingatui Viaduct, more than a century old and the largest wrought-iron structure in New Zealand. High above the valley floor, it is an impressive sight.

With open-air viewing areas on the train, you have ample opportunity to capture the breathtaking scenery of forested hillsides and glacial lakes. On dry days, you have the option of being dropped off and walking ahead of the train over a bridge to stretch your legs in the fresh country air.

Make sure you pop into the café car, where the train manager entertains you with snippets of local history and live narratives of the environment as it passes by. In the charming town of Middlemarch, you have some time to wander the quaint streets before the train heads back to Dunedin.
