Description:
Set out for a cultural immersion in the Tiwi Islands—a traditional Aboriginal community of approximately 3,000 people—off the coast of Darwin. Fly to Bathurst Island to tour the local museum, shop for arts and crafts, and explore important Tiwi rituals on this full-day excursion.
At the Darwin International Airport, board your plane and take off for a scenic, 30-minute ride over the Beagle Gulf to the charming island of Bathurst, 1 of the 11 Tiwi Islands, which are home to the Nguiu Aboriginal community. Begin at the Tiwi Museum, where you can view a variety of traditional works of art depicting figures from Aboriginal Dreamtime mythology. Make your way to the site of the island's early Christian mission to learn about the Catholic Church that stands here and the history of the first missionaries to the island.
Next, head to the arts and crafts center to see local artisans at work. Shop for charmingly crafted Tiwi wares, fabrics, and clothing, and chat with Tiwi ladies as they weave and paint. Refuel with a typically Aussie snack of Billy tea and damper, a type of soda bread prepared over an open campfire.
Make your way to a Tiwi burial site to observe a totem dance and the complex rituals of the Pukumani ceremony, which ensures a peaceful transition of the spirit into the afterlife.
