Description:

Climb on a bike—the locally preferred mode of transportation—and set off to explore the cultural and historical heart of Beijing. Pedal through centuries-old neighborhoods, enjoy a home-cooked lunch, and meet attentive locals at a a community-based NGO.

After meeting your guide, hop on your bike and head into the interconnected maze of hutongs—800-year-old narrow alleyways formed by the grey-brick walls of traditional one-story courtyard homes—around the Forbidden City. Ride past colorful tea shops, hear the sounds of vendors hawking their wares, and see locals out gathering daily provisions. These slow-paced, village-like districts—in stark contrast to modern Beijing—are slowly diminishing as developers move in.

For an authentic lunch, head over to Huiling, you may decide to help with the preparation or just sit back and take a break before enjoying your home-cooked meal in an open courtyard. While here, learn about the work of Huiling—a community-based NGO—and make some friends in the workshop.

Your tour ends back at the drum tower, where you are left to explore as you wish.
