The largest ski resort in the United States with 5,800 skiable acres (2,350 ha), Big Sky offers winter sports enthusiasts of all skill levels a huge variety of terrain to explore, all under the blue expanse of Montana's wide open skies.
Big Sky boasts 300 runs that crisscross 110 miles (177 km) of 4 different mountains: Spirit (formerly Spanish Peaks), Flat Iron, Andesite, and Lone Mountain. Approximately 21% of the terrain is classified as beginner, 22% as intermediate, 36% advanced, and 20% appeals to expert skiers. Known for its short lift lines, Big Sky runs 22 chair lifts and 7 surface lifts that help whisk skiers from the base to the summit at a rate of 29,000 per hour.
With the top of Lone Peak rising to an altitude of 11,166 feet (3,400 m), Big Sky sees more than 400 inches (10 m) of snowfall each year. Ride the state-of-the-art tram to the summit—advanced skiers can access the park's most challenging terrain, and visitors less inclined to tackle rocky couloirs can focus on the view. On a clear day, a panorama of 3 states, 2 national parks, and the majestic Grand Tetons spreads out before you.
There's plenty of ground to cover at Big Sky, with 4,350 feet (1,325 m) of vertical drop and runs that go on and on. Carve your way from Liberty Bowl to Mountain Mall on a 6-mile (9.6-km) groomer, or practice your jumps, grabs, and tricks in 1 of 7 terrain parks of varying difficulty, from the Cowpoke Beginner's Park to the Freestyle Forest.
