Description:

From the beaches of Byron Bay to inland villages fringing ancient rainforests, New South Wales is full of natural splendor. Take it all in with morning tea in charming Bangalow, free time to fill in the sun in Byron Bay, and a look at the lush and life-filled hinterlands in Murwillumbah.

As you approach the coast, make a stop in the quaint township of Bangalow to stroll down its historic main street. Stop for morning tea on the veranda of the Historical Society's Heritage House—this 1920s building was both a doctor's office and a brothel in past incarnations.

In Byron Bay, surfers and dolphins frolic in the waves and the town's eclectic, laidback vibe draws visitors from all around the world. Visit the Byron Bay Lighthouse, a 1901 beacon perched atop Cape Byron—mainland Australia's most easterly point—and set out for a nature walk along the headland. Keep your eyes peeled for sea turtles, rays, and migrating whales, and watch for wallabies hopping through the brush.

Enjoy a few hours of leisure time in Byron Bay, popping into artsy boutiques, swimming or snorkeling in the balmy waters, and relishing the surf-town ambiance over lunch. Then ride into the hinterlands, approaching the distant crag of Mount Warning as you pass by sugar cane fields and avocado plantations in the pastoral countryside of the Tweed Valley.

The town of Murwillumbah is surrounded by the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Gondwana Rainforests. Stop at the visitor center to learn more about these fascinating forests—they're the most bio-diverse region on the planet. Check out the mural depicting the lush sprawl of the Green Cauldron from the top of Mount Warning before making your way back to the Gold Coast through the tucked away gem of the Currumbin Valley.
