From Marrakech, take a local bus out toward the coast and meet your guide at the Essaouira station. Your tour begins with a sample from the city's oldest pastry shop, where you can taste time-honored family recipes, then follow your guide up onto the ramparts of the old city walls. Step through a hidden doorway into an ancient watchtower. From here, the view over the seaside medina—a UNESCO World Heritage Site—is spectacular, and an ideal vantage point to listen to your guide explain the similarities between Essaouira and coastal towns in France.
Next, dive into narrow backstreets and make your way to artists' studios, meeting calligraphers and painters as they display their work and provide demonstrations. Essaouira has a thriving fishing industry—enter the lively fish market to see it in action.
