Description:
Face pressed against the train window, you watch as tough, golden grass gives way to scree fields beneath the snow-capped peaks of the Southern Alps. Rising over Arthur’s Pass, your epic train journey is only halfway done. Lush forests, rugged coasts, and cascading glaciers are still to come.
From Christchurch, board the Tranzalpine railway and grab a seat next to panoramic windows that offer you uninhibited views of the stunning scenery soon to pass by. The train hums to life as you leave Christchurch, heading east.
Roll through expansive grasslands, past picturesque farms and into the beech forests. Gaze at the deep blue waters of the Waimakariri River and the cascading falls that feed it. Take a break for a snack and something to drink from the train’s food car, which serves light fare and beverages, before heading up the steep slopes of Arthur’s Pass. See snowy peaks give way to verdant rainforests, marking your arrival to the west coast of New Zealand’s south island.
In Greymouth, catch a comfortable bus to the Franz Josef Glacier. Snap photos of the icy mountain ebbing and flowing in super slow motion, or take a hike, being careful not to slip on the ever-changing landscape. When you’re done, head to your 4-star accommodations at the Franz Josef Glacier Hotel.
Day 2 brings a welcome repeat as you leave Franz Josef and head back to Christchurch by bus. Take the Tranzalpine back to Christchurch and embrace the opportunity to catch anything you missed on the way over.
