Description:

Travel through rugged Ka'u—home to Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, historic plantations, and the famed black-sand beach of Punalu'u. Along the way see Mauna Loa, explore a farm and coffee mill, and sample tasty macadamia nuts.

At Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, enter the Thurston Lava Tube and see where lava once flowed as an underground river. Hear stories about the power of Pele, revealing the creative and destructive forces of Kīlauea, an active volcano. Then peer into massive craters as your guide recounts how powerful forces of nature shaped this landscape.

Next, head to Kīlauea's sister volcano, Mauna Loa, and pass the sleepy plantation town of Pahala on the way to the Ka'u Coffee Mill. On a private tour of this working farm and mill, see how coffee is produced from plant to roast and learn how farmers repurposed old sugar cane fields to grow world-class coffee now giving the renowned Kona coffee a run for its money.

After a deli-style lunch, try award-winning coffee and freshly harvested macadamia nuts and then head to Punalu'u Beach via a private route through macadamia nut orchards. On this black-sand beach created by molten lava pouring into the sea, enjoy free time to dip your toes in the water and look for green sea turtles.

As you drive back to Hilo, stop at Hawaii Volcanoes National Park to see steam vents created by rainwater dripping down volcanic cracks. At Jaggar Museum, site of the Hawaii Volcano Observatory—where modern scientific study of volcanoes began 100 years ago—get a spectacular view of Halemaʻumaʻu Crater.
