Description:

Delve into Hawaii's World War II history with an all-day visit to Pearl Harbor and the major landmarks of Oahu. See the sites that marked both the beginning and end of American involvement in the war and drive by Punchbowl Cemetery and downtown Honolulu.

Your day starts with a short flight from Kauai to Oahu, where a comfortable bus waits to take you to Pearl Harbor. Go directly to the visitor center, where a short film presents a harrowing overview of the 1941 bombing by Japanese Imperial forces.

Ferry out to the USS Arizona Memorial, built above the ghostly wreckage of the battleship that sunk that fateful day, taking over a thousand sailors and marines down with it. From there, head to the USS Missouri. The last battleship built by the US Navy, Big Mo’s deck is the very spot where Japan formally surrendered to the United States.

Hop back in the bus and wind up at the Punchbowl National Memorial of the Pacific, a gorgeously landscaped cemetery that is the peaceful final resting place of 34,000 veterans.

Next make your way through bustling, beachfront downtown Honolulu and Waikiki. Pass by Iolani Palace—a stately residence and the only royal palace on American soil—and cruise by historic Kawaiaha’o Church. A towering 18-foot (5-m) statue of King Kamehameha, unifier of the Hawaiian Islands, bids you aloha as you head back to the airport for your return flight to Kauai.
