Reflect on the culturally rich history of Kyoto—Japan's capital for more than 1,000 years—on this take a breaked, guided stroll through the city. Gaze at the red torii gates of Fushimi Inari Shrine, soak up the stillness of Tofukuji Temple’s Zen gardens, and prowl the Gion district for real Geishas.

Start at the Fushimi Inari Shrine, nestled at the base of a tree-covered mountainside. Count the numerous stone fox statues—considered the messengers of the Gods—that dot this lush property, and pass through the winding red torii gates that stretch for miles into the mountains.

The Tofukuji Temple, originally built in the 13th century, is your next stop. Admire how natural earth elements such as sand, rocks, and moss can come together in contemplative artwork. Ponder the purpose of Zen from a shaded, serene spot, and imagine the scene as it was in 1236.

Come twilight, head for the twinkling lights of Gion.
