Description:
Rise above the clouds on Mt. Haleakala and marvel at its otherworldly beauty and the rare animal species near the summit. Along the way, admire the Iao Needle and stop in Lahaina, a 19th-century whaling village.
Wind through Upcountry Maui, where farmers grow lavender, protea, pineapples, onions, and strawberries. As you travel, admire ocean views, rainforests and waterfalls in cooler, wetter regions, and ride by volcanic areas and dramatic foliage in drier spots.
A long ascending road through horse farms and towering eucalyptus groves takes you to Haleakala National Park to visit the spectacular volcanic crater, Mt. Haleakala—meaning “House of the Rising Sun” in Hawaiian. At an altitude of 10,023 feet (3,055 m), you are literally above the clouds with a view of Mauna Loa volcano on the neighboring Big Island.
Next, head to Iao Valley—where King Kamehameha defeated Maui's army—and see the Iao Needle, a massive, tree-covered lava formation that towers above the valley floor at a height of 2,250 feet (686 m). Along the way, stop for a lunch break and free time in Lahaina, a town once home to whalers and seafarers that is now known for its restaurants, boutiques, and galleries.
