Description:

Explore Mexico’s rich and vibrant religious heritage with a visit to the pre-Hispanic archaeological site of Teotihuacan, the colonial church of Santiago at Tlatelolco, and the contemporary Catholic Shrine of Guadalupe.

Start your tour with a stop at Tlatelolco’s main square, the Plaza de las Tres Culturas, for an introduction to the 3 main periods of Mexican history: pre-Columbian, Spanish colonial, and the modern independent mestizo nation. Visit the Church of Santiago, built on top of Aztec ruins in 1522, and learn about the final stand of the Aztecs against the conquistador Hernan Cortes.

Next, explore the 2,500-year-old Aztec settlement at Toetihuacan, the mythological “birthplace of the gods.” Ponder the mysterious origins of the massive city’s complexes as you climb the 243 steps of the Pyramid of the Sun, traverse the 2.5-mile (4-km) Avenue of the Dead, and look at the obsidian and jade artifacts at the Pyramid of the Moon. See the bird and butterfly motifs that decorate the columns of the Palace of the Quetzalpapalotl, and gaze up at the carvings of a snake and bird deity on the Temple of the Feathered Serpent.

After lunch in a local restaurant, make your way to the Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe—the largest shrine in Mexico and where Our Lady of Guadalupe, Mexico’s patron saint, supposedly appeared to Saint Juan Diego. Visit the new and old churches on the site—the tilma of Saint Juan Diego is housed here—before your return trip to Mexico City.
