Description:
Centuries-old stone villages, sunbaked river valleys filled with vineyards—there’s no more perfectly picturesque setting for a tasting tour of Provencal wines. Visit traditional vintners in the Coteaux-d’Aix-en-Provence region, sample their wares, and linger over lunch in a quaint restaurant.
After you’re picked up from your hotel, ride in air-conditioned comfort toward the sun-drenched countryside north of Marseille. Your guide rattles off facts and information about the area as you approach Montagne Saint-Victoire, a 3,300-foot (1,011-m) ridge that dominates the landscape and was a favorite subject of the painter Cézanne.
Make your way between picturesque villages perched on the slopes of the mountain, and stop in at 3–5 family-run wineries nestled at its base. At each estate, your guide helps you to chat with the vintners and shares their story as you sip and swirl some of their finest vintages and varietals.
Enjoy tastings of 12–20 different wines, from fresh and structured whites to pale peach-hued rosés and rich, spicy reds. As you sample each bottle, your guide describes the unique terroir in the region, and discusses how the soil and climate influence the characteristics of the wine produced in the Coteaux d’Aix-en-Provence appellation.
