Enjoy the delightful sight of charming blue penguins scurrying up the beach, back to land from a day’s fishing. From your easy vantage point in a comfortable grandstand, listen to informative commentary about efforts to preserve the world’s smallest penguin as they return to their nests.

Visit the Oamaru Blue Penguin Colony, committed to protecting these cute creatures with specialized mating programs and habitat maintenance. With over 130 breeding pairs, there are plenty of animals to observe in this rock quarry of Oamaru Harbor, although numbers do vary with the seasons.

To best appreciate the show, the center has set up a sheltered grandstand. Take a seat and hear local wildlife experts give interpretive lectures as adorable full-bellied penguins trundle up onto the sand after filling up on squid, cod, and crustaceans.
