Description:
Take a week to explore the sights of northeastern New Zealand on a tour through the country's diverse culture and scenery. Admire the Bay of Islands and Cape Brett Lighthouse, learn about Maori culture, and venture into the Waitomo Glowworm Caves.
Day 1:
Travel to the Bay of Islands and visit the Waitangi Treaty Reserve to learn about New Zealand's early Maori and European history. Next, hop on a catamaran to cruise past Cape Brett Lighthouse and the famous Hole in the Rock. Watch for dolphins, whales, and other marine life before you turn in for a take a breaking night on the bay.
Day 2:
Spend the day at leisure. If you like, you can visit the Ninety Mile Beach or Cape Reinga, the North Island's northernmost point, or enjoy a day of sailing or sea kayaking on the bay.
Day 3:
If you haven't already, head across the bay to see Russell, New Zealand's first capital. In the afternoon, a drive through pastoral farmland takes you back to the modern capital, where you spend the night in an Auckland hotel.
Day 4:
Travel to the Waitomo Glowworm Caves, explore its amazing limestone formations, and take a boat through the Glowworm Grotto to see the light from thousands of glowworms illuminate the cavern. In the afternoon, visit the Maori heartland of Rotorua and settle in for the night.
Day 5:
Pay a visit to Te Puia, a Maori cultural center amid a wonderland of geysers and mud pools. Discover native flora and fauna at Rainbow Springs Nature Park and see sheepdog trials and a sheep-shearing display at the Agrodome Sheep Show. In the evening, enjoy a dinner of authentic hāngi cuisine and a concert at a traditional communal site.
Day 6:
Spend a day at leisure before you return to Auckland through the lush Waikoto farmlands.
Day 7:
Have breakfast in the morning before your transfer takes you to Auckland Airport.
