Description:

Journey back in time to 1777, when the Continental Army battled the British in the War of Independence. Visit key sites from the Revolutionary War, listen to fascinating historical narration from an expert guide, and customize your private tour to focus on the locations that interest you most.

After you’re picked up from your hotel, drive out of Philadelphia and into the countryside of Pennsylvania and Delaware, following the trail of the Revolutionary War. Stop at Fort Mifflin on the Delaware River, a strategic outpost captured by the British during their conquest of Philadelphia. From there, drive an hour or so out to the sprawling park where the Battle of Brandywine was fought. See the stone house that George Washington used as his headquarters, and spend some time touring the restored Quaker homes if you’d like.

Discuss the tactics of the Battle of Germantown to understand the Patriots’ loss here as you make your way toward some of the grand estates in the area, including the Benjamin Chew House, where some of the bloodiest fighting took place. Admire the Georgian architecture—and bullet-riddled walls—of this elegant mansion, check out the old stone mills at Hagley, or continue on to Longwood Gardens to roam the elaborate grounds of this 19th-century botanical park.

In Malvern, see the site of the Battle of Paoli, and wind down country roads to Valley Forge, where the Continental Army camped during the harsh winter of 1777–1778. Check out the various monuments and markers throughout the park or chat with interpreters at the log cabins of Muhlenberg’s Brigade, and then sit back for a scenic ride back to Philly along the Schuykill River and through the Museum District.
