Description:

Set out on foot to immerse yourself in the rich heritage and authentic cuisine of North America's most historic Chinatown. Discover its intricately woven society as you learn about the Tong Wars, and try freshly made fortune cookies and delicious dim sum at a favorite local tea house.

Meet your guide in front of the emblematic Dragon Gate and transition from Union Square’s urban order to the eclectic shops, hanging red lanterns, and colorful temples of Chinatown. Check out the pagoda-style architecture of the neighborhood’s banks and buildings, admire the heaps of imported tea sets, dolls, and cooking utensils that crowd store windows, and note locals savoring a moment of calm with Tai Chi practice or a board game in the open space of Portsmouth Square.

Head to a nearby eatery for a snack of traditional Chinese Dim Sum, sweet and savory pastries, buns, and dumplings accompanied by steaming cups of fragrant tea. As you practice your chopstick skills on delicacies like cha siu baau (pork buns) and egg custard tarts, listen as your guide shares stories about Chinatown’s infamous Tong Wars, when rival gangs ruled the neighborhood. From the 1880s through the 1920s, some secret factions of tongs (sworn brotherhoods) ran brothels, opium dens, and other organized crime throughout the district while others tried to keep them under control and clean up the neighborhood.

Follow your nose to a fortune cookie factory, where you can see how these typical treats are made and folded, and watch as slips of paper bearing well-wishes or prophecies are slipped inside.
