Venice
Destination Highlight

Milan is a city that arouses extreme feelings, just like the city lifestyle. A frenetic, restless rhythm is part of both work and leisure, so much so that it is difficult to stay unmoved and not get overwhelmed by all the cultural and social stimulus. Maybe for this reason, Milan makes itself indispensable, because it is impossible to feel so alive and full of energy when you are away from the city. Milan is always one step ahead: a laboratory of artistic experiments and a building site for social behavior that is continuously changing. City full of contradictions, ancient and modern, trends and counter-trends, fashion and underground, middle class and working class, but always simply “cool”.

About the Ship
The River Countess underwent a complete design renovation recently, debuting as the S.S. La Venezia to bring guests an enhanced luxury experience inspired by Northern Italy. The redesign of the S.S. La Venezia drew influence from the fine Fortuny fabrics displayed prominently onboard. Murano glass, gilded accents and artistic etched elements pay homage to popular Venetian aesthetics of the early 20th century, creating an onboard atmosphere that is at once elegant and nostalgic.

Sep 14, 2027 - Stresa

This summer and winter holiday resort in the province of Novara is situated on the west side of Lake Maggiore on the slopes of Mount Mottarone, looking out over the Borromeo islands. The lakeside is very attractive, with a wide avenue of trees and flowerbeds, lined with hotels and villas set amongst trees. From here you have a panoramic view of the Borromeo islands. The avenue opens out on to Piazza Marconi, overlooked by the neoclassical church of Sant’Ambrogio, designed by Zanoia and built in 1790. It has a single nave and contains seventeenth century paintings by local artists and nineteenth century sculptures by Somaini. Beyond the piazza lies the Villa Ducale which was built within a beautiful park in 1770 and at one time belonged to the philosopher Antonio Rosmini who died there in 1855. It is now a study centre dedicated to Rosmini and contains mementoes and rare editions. Rosmini College, founded in 1852, is in Viale Marconi. The church has Rosmini’s tomb and a monument to him by Vela. Stresa also hosts national and international conferences and congresses which are held in the modern Palazzo dei Congressi.

Sep 17, 2027 - Bolzano

Bolzano lies 265 m above sea level along one of the most important routes running from the Mediterranean to the North Sea, connecting North and South. It is surrounded on all sides by mountains. Bolzano's inhabitants belong to three linguistic groups (70 % Italians, 26 % Germans and a small percentage of Ladins) and it has a marked Tyrolean atmosphere. The city was constructed during the 12th and 13th century. Its historical center is rich in monuments, and Piazza Walther is considered the elegant heart of the city. Above the city, in the Dolomites, lies the "Rosengarten"- the legendary realm of Laurin, the dwarf king. His enchanted garden glows an unearthly red at twilight. Bolzano has a Mediterranean climate with alpine splendor, with a yearly average high of 62° F and low of 43° F. Bolzano is the ideal starting point for walks and hikes. Visit Bolzano’s Museo Archeologico, which is the new home of the Similaun Man, the approximately 5300 year old mummy found in 1991 on the glacier of Similaun.

Sep 21, 2027 - Padua

Extraordinary Padua, Italy, just 20 mi/30 km west of Venice, was one of the locales in Shakespeare's The Taming of the Shrew.

Its beautiful streets hold numerous attractions, including a 13th-century university, what's thought to be the oldest Italian clock (the 1344 clock tower at Palazzo del Capitano) and various other art-filled, eye-pleasing buildings.

If you've lost anything, then you're in the right city: St. Anthony, the saint of lost things, is also the patron saint of Padua. Every 13 June, the saint's feast day, thousands of pilgrims flock to the 13th-century Basilica di Sant'Antonio to pray for the recovery of whatever they have lost. The grand basilica is noted for its Byzantine influences and eight domes.

On the square outside the church, admire Donatello's equestrian statue of the statesman Gattemelata (the Honeyed Cat). But many art lovers make the trip to Padua just to visit the Scrovegni Chapel with Giotto's stunning, gemlike frescoes, the most complete medieval fresco series still intact.

Padua is best seen as a half-day trip from Venice.
