3 Mount Kilimanjaro – Machame Camp (9,843 Feet)Leave the acacia trees of the Equator behind and venture skywards to Machame village, where your trek begins. Walk through a forest of fig and rubber trees, begonias and other tropical vegetation as you ascend to your first campsite.

4 Mount Kilimanjaro – Shira Camp (12,402 Feet)Awake early to trek up a steep track through tall grasses, volcanic rock and bearded heather. Encounter giant groundsels through the ghostly landscape of volcanic lava, caves and foaming streams.

5 Mount Kilimanjaro – Barranco Camp (12,795 Feet)A steady walk takes you up to the pass at Lava Tower, across the Bastain stream and down toward Barranco Camp. Here, numerous waterfalls converge to form the Umbwe River.
